About Us

Momentia Victoria is a grassroots coalition in Victoria, BC that is empowering people living with memory loss to remain connected and active in the community. We draw our inspiration from Momentia Seattle. Together we are creating communities with a variety of social and creative, and recreational activities that are inclusive of people living with dementia and their family care partners.

In reimagining a dementia-inclusive community, the following values will guide us:

  1. Lived Experience: The voices and experiences of people living with dementia are important in creating opportunities for full and meaningful lives in the community, lives of creativity, connection, joy, and contribution.

  2. Inclusion: Memory does not define individuals. Opportunities for people living with dementia to connect, engage, and give back can reduce dementia stigma and social isolation. Dementia-inclusive activities and programs (e.g., choirs, art classes, book clubs, museum visits, and volunteering in the community) help normalize living with memory loss and focus on resilience and strengths.

  3. Collaboration: Advocacy and creative reimagining are needed to address the challenges that limit the participation of people living with dementia in their communities, congregations, and neighbourhoods. Only by working together can we shift the dementia narrative.

  • One can live a good life (i.e. offering choices and meaningful actvities) with dementia

  • People living with dementia are a vital part of community and deserve opportunities to connect and engage as they always have.

  • People living with dementia are the experts on their own experience and the authors of their own stories

  • People living with dementia have strengths and valuable contributions to make within their communities

  • A vibrant and healthy community is one that welcomes all its members to play a meaningful role

  • By working together, we can transform what it means to live with dementia in community, changing the story from one of stigma to one of inclusion.
